Couldn't finish this book May 22, 2010 Porter (Houston, TX) First, the book may be 300 pages, but because of the size of the text, spacing, and margins it is more like a 200 page book. Second, the fact that it was published by a no-name company should have been a warning, but I came here and read the reviews. The people who liked the book convinced me to over look the criticisms of it, so I decided to buy it from a half price book store. I still feel as if I over paid for it!
The book goes into excruciating details of how to do basic things. You have four cards to a straight. It's open ended, let's spend 2 pages and about 4 paragraphs talking about what that means. Let's not forget to talk about how the card that makes your hand might be the card that makes your opponents hand, and you are still second best. You have four cards to a flush. Let's spend another 2-3 pages talking about how you might be able to make your flush. But wait, that card that makes your flush might have made a better hand for your opponent! Then after spending 20 pages talking about all of the hand variations, and how to figure out the number of outs you have, he gives you a quiz to make sure you understand these simple concepts. The book quickly became tedious in the amount of repitition it gave. The poker strategy was simplistic and better sources can be found elsewhere.
I've read over 30 poker books and this one is only the second one that I could not finish (The other being Beyond Tells)---heck, I couldn't even get half way through this one despite my best efforts over a 3 week period!
Poker Odds February 5, 2010 John L. Hooper (Palm Desert, CA USA) This book is full of good info, but is a bit difficult to decipher the math.
Great basic book for poker math and theory July 1, 2009 A. Nelson (Tempe, AZ) I bought this book when I first started playing poker seriously, and still refer back to it from time to time. It lays out the ideas behind some basic and intermediate poker strategies, and explains very nicely all the math behind pot odds, implied odds, etc. I found the math sections very clear and understandable, but I am something of a math brain so maybe that's just me. I've also since learned simpler methods of calculating odds to hit an out than his DIPO method laid out in the book. But overall, I'd highly recommend this book to any beginners or advanced beginners, and even regular players who want a refresher on the theories behind the moves we tend to make so routinely.
Misleading title: this book only applies to limit January 18, 2009 rbnn (Berkeley, CA United States) 5 out of 9 found this review helpful
The title of this book, "Weighing the Odds in Hold'em Poker", is highly misleading.
The book only pertains to limit Hold'Em. Usually, the phrase "hold'em" only means no-limit, or perhaps both limit and no limit. The word "hold'em" in a book title does not mean "only limit hold'em".
There is no indication, at the time of this writing, in the editors' description on Amazon that this book only pertains to limit hold'em.
This book is useless. There are better books available. October 31, 2008 Douglas Palaschak (Oregon) 2 out of 13 found this review helpful
I have read better books regarding the probabilities pertinent to poker. I was searching for these better books when I came across this weak book. This terrible book has no merit. It is not entertaining. It is not useful for making decisions in the game of poker. The author merely wants to have a book on the market. I advise you to look elsewhere for a book about the probabilities pertinent to winning at poker.
