Product Description
Thanks to television, the internet, and the incredible popularity of the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas, when Kill Phil was first published in 2006, tournament poker had become the richest sport in the world. The problem was that no-limit hold 'em was dominated by a handful of experienced and skilled professional players. Kill Phil turned the tables on the pros by introducing a strategy that allowed even an absolute novice to compete against the best players in the world. The Kill Phil strategy remains highly effective when used in confrontations with even the world's best players, but tournament play is evolving. This revised edition reflects the new trends in tournament poker by refining the use of the all-in move and providing adaptations that take into account the new style of hyper-aggressive play. At its core, though, Kill Phil remains what it's been from the start--the best method possible for entering the exciting and potentially lucrative poker-tournament arena. As a special bonus, this new edition contains the complete set of strategies formatted as they appear on the Kill Phil strategy cards--an added $14.95 value!

5 out of 5 stars Great book   August 3, 2010

I bought this for my husband and he loves it. He reads the book again and again.

5 out of 5 stars Very Honest and effective   January 2, 2010
Ath K. Nikolopoulos (Kos, Greece)
OK, I have read some books out there and I had some initial thoughts about the need for such a book.

This book is for the beginners or the inexperienced ones in big tournaments and confrontations with big players. You know, the type of players that ask you how much you've got (chips in your stack, they mean) and just by the way you answer (not the anwser itself!) can understand what kind of hand you are at, and how to outplay you!

If you fall in that category, there is nothing to be ashamed for (we all were novices at some time) but you have to protect yourself.

And this is how you do it!

I have actually seen so many poker stars on various TV shows mentioning the importance of this book and how it affected the games play (since it helped a lot their opponents, especially "fishes") that I could not ignore it.

So does it do what it promises?

Yes it does.

It gives you an effective way of dealing with the Pros, the bullies, the tough opponents, if you have not the experience or the ways yet to deal with them.

It also tells you of its imperfections, its weaknesses, its limitations! And it suggests that you study and improve further!

That's the most honest thing I have read ever! Knowing that you have a strategy that is NOT perfect, NOT ideal for all situations, but it is a GREAT one for specific situations, is of crusial importance. I know I don't need to be a KP with my friends playing at home. I know that this one is a simple strategy guide, not suited for all sircumstances, otherwise everybody would know and use it everywhere...

And I know that if I ever get into the Big Game and feel that I am in danger of being outplayed by the sharks, this one is a BIG weapon in my hands! One that can frustrate even Phil Hellmuth, Phil Ivey or any other "Phil" out there...

And even if I don't use it, I would like to be aware of it, just in case an opponent does use it instead! Cause then I wouldn't be really frustrated i.e. by an opponent going all-in on me on every hand heads up!!! I would simply understand his strategy and play accordingly!!!

There is a quote in the book, from Daniel Negreanu doing exactly that: Deciding to call an opponent that was going all-in on him heads up in every single hand! Daniel told him " I call you cause I have to, since I know that if I don't you will just keep doing this all the time!" And it shows why Daniel is such a great player, but also why this strategy is so effective! Imagine the tough position such a player is getting at, against a possible fish using KP strategy!

Need I say more?

5 out of 5 stars A Massive help in the Poker world!!   December 9, 2009

I was recommended to get this book a good friend and a very well know world Poker player Nic Szeremeta.

Since reading Kill Phil, I have made 5 out of 7 final tables in my local Casino Tournaments and won 3 in total. Before, I was usually losing my chips just before the final table, but with the tactics explained in this book, I have managed to bully my way through and go into the final table with a very sizeable stack.

After playing for 4 years prior to reading this, this book has taught me things I would have never even thought of doing previous to it.

I would recommend to anyway who is a keen Poker player, whether you are just starting or have been playing for a long time, get this book. It really does help!

5 out of 5 stars Please do not buy this book.   October 13, 2009

Great concepts. And the sequal is good too. I won the next three live tournaments when I used these strageties, and have won good money online too. I hope no one buys this book so I can beat you at the tables.

3 out of 5 stars This book has its uses   July 10, 2009

"Kill Phil" expounds a formulaic approach to evening the playing field between beginners and very good players. Their second book, "Kill Everyone" is for players actually wanting to get better.

I don't feel the authors were proposing serious players use this method a long term strategy. They were simply giving rank amateurs the tools necessary to sit at a table with the best in the world and avoid playing "their" game... which is strong postflop play. As a quick fix, it does the job.

The major flaw in the book is that only 1% or less of the poker population are actually good players. So if you use this approach in your home game or local daily tournament you won't get far. People who can't lay down top pair or a top 10% hand preflop (no matter the action) will take you out very very fast.

And if you happen to go on a heater and make the final 2 tables or so, the good players there will recognize what you are doing and destroy you long before you get close to the big money.

However, if by sheer luck you happen to win a seat to the WSOP and have never played poker much before (through a satellite, freeroll, or whatever), then maybe this book will let you finish in the top 60% vs the top 90%. And if your goal is to spend a few more hours with your heroes, then by all means, employ the strategy of this book.

I am awarding this book 3 stars simply by the fact that it will help an aspiring poker player immediately notice if someone is trying to use the Kill Phil or some similar method at the tables. You also should read it before reading their Kill Everyone which references this book multiple times.

While this book doesn't really address how to attack a player using the Kill Phil style, other books have. In a nutshell, Kill Phillers pick up a lot of small pots and lose a lot of big ones. In their attempt to avoid postflop play, they end up getting trapped either before or after the flop anyways.

So I definitely recommend reading this book to expand your overall poker knowledge, but if you are serious about getting better at the game, do not employ its strategies unless its for experimentation only.

If you actually want to get better at poker, read the Harrington on Hold'em series to gain a basic understanding of the game and then move on to something advanced, like Snyder's books or Kill Everyone, to learn how to destroy your opponents.
